The Concrete Construction Division is part of the Street Division, but operates largely independently. Comprised of three individuals who are assigned to do concrete construction related activities, this division's two primary objectives are the repair of sidewalks in Rolla and completion of contracts with citizens for construction services in the right of way.
Sidewalk repairs are necessary to meet Americans with Disabilities (ADA) guidelines. Existing sidewalks must be relatively smooth and provide ramps for handicapped accessibility. The first area of emphasis has been downtown Rolla and the surrounding area, with the city's long-term goal being to install handicap ramps at each street crossing.
Contracts with citizens represent work requested by property owners. This consists of driveway, curb and gutter, and sidewalk installation and repair done at the request of private citizens. Abutting property owners are assessed for material costs for all these repairs except those required to meet ADA guidelines.
