Solid Waste / Recycling

News | What can I recycle?

recycle centerThe Solid Waste Department consists of the Sanitation, Recycling, and Vehicle Maintenance divisions. The Sanitation Division is responsible for all regular Municipal trash pick-up service, for both residential and commercial customers.

Sanitation also offers rental of construction dumpster's for contractors or large do-it-yourself jobs, and special pickups of appliances and other large or unusual items.

The Recycling Division offers both drop-off and regular pick-up of a wide variety of recyclable materials from its headquarters on Old St. James Road. Drop off service at the Recycling Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Recycling Center accepts various types of plastic, glass, paper, aluminum and tin cans, and cardboard. Sorting and processing of these materials takes place on site, and the resulting material is then sold on the open market. Approximately 3000 tons of waste per year is kept out of landfills and returned to usable consumer forms through the efforts of the Recycling Division.

In addition to these two large divisions, the Solid Waste Department is also responsible for the operation of the City's central Vehicle Maintenance shop, which services City vehicles from all City departments.

Municipal waste collected by the department is hauled to the Phelps County Transfer Station, located at 12441 County Road 2170, Rolla. Call the Solid Waste office at 364-6693 for more information on the Transfer Station or any of the services offered by the Department.

Free Spring Clean-up set for April 5 in Rolla

The City of Rolla Solid Waste Department will hold the annual city-wide “free spring clean up” on Saturday, April 5. If you wish to participate, all items must be placed near the curb by 6 a.m.

Examples of items that will be accepted include furniture, microwaves, televisions, old clothes, and household trash. Items that will not be accepted include appliances, water heaters, yard waste, tires, or construction debris such as sheet rock, shingles, concrete or rock. Loose items should be placed in boxes or bags and small pieces of lumber should be bundled.

We ask that you do not place your roll-out container to the curb, because during this special spring clean-up it will not be emptied. If you have any questions, please call the Solid Waste Department at (573) 364-6693.
