What is Disc Golf?
Disc Golf is one of the fastest growing outdoor recreational activities in the country. Similar to golf, the object of Disc Golf is to complete each hole in as few throws (strokes in the traditional game) as possible. When you're trying to tell friends about your passion for disc golf, they will grasp the concept more quickly if you use the term 'frisbee golf'* instead.
Disc Golf is a sport for all to enjoy as it can by played from school age to golden age making it a terrific lifetime sport. One of the biggest attractions to the game, however, may be the fees required in order to play. It's FREE! Coming in October, the Parks & Recreation Department & The Centre will have flying discs available at the front desk available for rent with picture identification. There will also be an assortment of discs and disc golf supplies available for purchase.
Parking is available at the Centre. Scorecards with maps can be picked up at the front desk. Take pride in your course and please help keep Ber Juan Park clean by putting trash, cigarette butts, etc, in proper disposal containers.
PLEASE BE ALERT TO OTHERS USING THE PARK, ESPECIALLY THE WALKING TRAIL!! As with "ball golf", if your shot is going near another person, be sure to yell to them. "Fore" is better than "Heads Up!" You don't want the person to be hit while looking up.
There are 2 primary mottos embraced by disc golfers: "Most Fun Wins" and "Leave the Course Cleaner Than You Found It." Skill is fine, but Fun is even more important. Email us with any questions about the Ber Juan Park course, rules, equipment, or anything to do with the game of Disc Golf.
Special thanks to the Phelps County Community Partnership for donating the targets and to Todd Koenig, Seth Orsborn, Kermit Applegate and Dave McCormack for help in planning and installing the course.
Leagues and tournaments will be offered in the near future by the Parks & Recreation Department. For more information contact the Parks & Recreation Department or The Centre at 341-2386 or via e-mail at parks@rollacity.org.
*So why isn't the game called frisbee golf? "Frisbee" is a registered trademark much like "Kleenex" is in the tissue world, so we must call the game 'disc golf' and explain from there. Oddly enough, the company which produces Frisbee toys makes very few golf discs.
