History of the Rolla Fire Department
We're currently researching the history of the R.F.D. but here are a few facts to get you started... If anybody has any pictures or information that we can use on this page please contact us at 364-6989 or email the photos to Lynette.
1870's - Founded in the 1870's, the department started as a fire brigade with hooks and ladders, axes, and hand-drawn hose carts in lieu of a fire engine.
1900 - Andy Heimberger was the Chief in 1900 and shortly afterward Frank Ayers and E.Y. Line joined the department. Their salary in those days was their poll tax, $2.50.
1920's - Later in 1920, the firefighters pay was raised to 50 cents a call and $1 per call where water was used. The need for paid full-time personnel became obvious as the community grew.
Present - The City of Rolla Fire & Rescue consists of 28 members committed to life, safety and property preservation. With two stations staffed full-time and four firefighters per apparatus, the department considers itself a leader in the region in response and readiness for any emergency.
